'Spring' in bloom
Howard, Gere take 'Break'
Richard Gere and Terrence Howard are in talks to star in Spring
Break in Bosnia, for which the Weinstein Co. has acquired
North American, Australian and New Zealand distribution rights.
The Matador helmer Richard Shepard will direct.
Shepard wrote the comic drama, which is based on an Esquire article
by Scott Anderson about the half-hearted attempt he and fellow journalists Sebastian
Junger and John Falk made at corralling an alleged Bosnian war criminal. The
three found themselves in a predicament when they were identified as a CIA hit
squad.
Article was originally set up at Intermedia and Warner Independent by Mark Johnson,
who produced "The Chronicles of Narnia." Though actors Gere, Howard
and Topher Grace circled the project, Warner Bros. opted not to go forward with
the film.
TWC stepped in quickly to grab distrib rights. Johnson and Scott Kroopf will
produce the co-production of Intermedia and QED Intl. Latter, led by CEO Bill
Block, will co-finance and handle worldwide sales.
The Weinstein Co. commitment makes the film a go for a summer start in Europe.
It is unclear whether Grace will return to round out the trio.
Gere just completed playing Clifford Irving in "The Hoax" for helmer Lasse Hallstrom. Howard, who's coming off "Crash" and "Hustle & Flow," stars in the drama "P.D.R." (Michael Fleming, Variety)
April 14, 2006:
Hot off Sundance film The Matador, Richard Shepard has been signed to script and direct Spring Break in Bosnia co-financed by Warner Independent and Intermedia.
Mark Johnson is producing and Cherry Road Films will exec produce, with the latter providing development financing on the film.
Bosnia-set drama is drawn from an Esquire magazine article by Scott Anderson about journos Sebastian Junger and John Falk, who made a half-hearted attempt to catch Radovan Karadzic, an alleged architect of ethnic cleansing. The correspondents were promptly mistaken for CIA agents and came close to finding their target.
Shepard has been offered numerous scripts since Harvey and Bob Weinstein purchased Pierce Brosnan starrer The Matador in a splashy Sundance deal. The Weinsteins will release the film this fall with Miramax.
"I'll fictionalize the journalists but was intrigued by these guys who risk their lives, and by what they encounter when they decide to spend their down time locating this war criminal," Shepard said.
WIP's Mark Gill, Michael Andreen and Paul Federbush will supervise, and Shepard will head to Bosnia shortly to begin his own research. He is hopeful that the film will be his next pic.
Shepard just directed the pilot of the CBS drama hopeful QUANTICO. (Michael Fleming, Variety)
